Robin Howie first became involved in occupational in 1974, He was awarded a BERBOH Diploma in Comprehensive Occupational Hygiene in 1982 and was President of the British
Occupational Hygiene Society in 1998-99. He has worked mainly in the fields of the reality of PPE performance in the workplace and in asbestos sampling and data and risk analysis.
During the early 1990s he designed and led a major HSE-funded study to determine the performance of powered respirator during asbestos removal operations. The results of this
study led to the rewriting of BS4275 on the selection and use of RPE and in lowering the assumed protection factor of such devices from 2000 to 40. He has been self-employed since
1995 and has been involved in over 800 legal case; mainly on asbestos-induced disease cases, since that date. He has published over 100 papers and articles.
